A quiet!, tree lined street, North off of the Main Road. Love Lane originally was used as a canoe path for Indians moving from Long Island Sound to the Peconic Bay. This shortcut lasted until the 1700's when the settlers of Mattituck decided to put up gates and block the area from the cart path (Route 25) to the head of the creek so that cattle could graze. With the coming of the railroad, the land between the creek and Route 25 was sold to individual buyers. The lovely path that lead to the head of the creek was a well known romantic stroll that many suitors took advantage of. Thus the name "Lovers Lane" later shortened to "Love Lane."
